Three steps to the “best next” workplace
Strategy + Business
Looking towards a post-COVID world, business leaders are thinking about what the future of work will look like. This article argues that the pandemic has provided businesses with a ‘blank slate’ to rethink workplace practices and routines. The following leadership practices can help shape the ‘best next’ for organisations:
- Declare yourselves - what motivates your team and makes them most productive? Allow team members to share their insights and use these insights to inform elements of the workplace.
- Make the highest, best use of everyone’s time - how would employees ideally spend their time at work? Effectively align people with tasks to unlock potential and cut waste.
- Give everyone a shot at life balance - the pandemic has blurred the lines between home and office, leading to burnout. Organisations should commit to helping employees lead a fulfilling professional and personal life.
Leaders responsible for digital transformation need to take a bigger view of the change process
LSE
By 2015 most large organisations were espousing digital business strategies. But by 2021, if you exclude the ‘born digital’ and the obvious hi-tech companies, few had become digital businesses. This highlights that organisational change can take a very long time and underlines the importance of execution capabilities, without which strategy means very little.
The 2020-21 crisis has accelerated the adoption of digital technologies and the moves to digital business but left much work to be done if organisations are to enhance competitiveness, streamline operations, improve organisational resilience, and become digital businesses.
Three steps to better virtual meetings
Harvard Business Review
After conducting a LinkedIn discussion with HBR members, three management consultants have come up with a three-step plan to make virtual meetings a more productive tool. The process it to build BEANs (behaviour enablers, artifacts and nudges) to make desired behaviours habitual:
- Be clear about the specific behaviour you are trying to encourage.
- Identify ‘behavioural blockers’ - the things you are doing instead of following your desired behaviour.
- Build a BEAN to encourage desired behaviour and overcome the identified blocker.
